Introduction to Leadership Skills Training (ILST)
This is a district level course directed and taught by older Scouts for the purposes of modeling a scout-run camp out and teaching camping skills. A scout must be 13 to attend. National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
This course is a 5-day, outdoor leadership training experience for troop youth leaders. Its principle function is to help Scoutmasters by training their top scout leaders in the skills of leadership. This course is a National BSA-developed course that closely parallels the material provided in the Wood Badge training for adults. This course is offered by the Circle Ten Council. A scout must be 13 and have completed ILST to attend. National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE)
This course is the ultimate in Leadership Training. It is run by youth hand-picked from across the country representing some of our future's most outstanding leaders. Any Scout interested in staffing an NYLT course or aspiring to be his troop's SPL should consider attending NAYLE. The courses are also open to Venturers; therefore, men and women age 14-21 are encouraged to attend this outstanding course. This course is offered by Scouting America at Philmont Scout Ranch and Summit Bechtel Reserve. |
AdultYouth Protection, Fast Start, This Is Scouting, and Leader Specific Training are the basic courses that every adult leader should have within 90 days of registering as a Scout Leader. All of these courses are offered on-line through MyScouting.org
Youth Protection Training (YPT)
Youth Protection Training gives a thorough understanding of Scouting America practices for protecting youth from abuse and how adults can protect themselves from false accusations of abuse. A renewal course is required every two years for adults to remain active. It is also offered in person. Troop Committee Position Training
This course is designed to give a quick orientation to Scouting. It will help you prepare for your first meeting as a Boy Scout Leader/parent by covering the Troop Meeting, the Troop Committee, the Outdoor Program and the Basic Concepts of Scouting. Scout Leader Specific Training
(For any Leader who will work with Scouts) Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster: This is the first of a two part course. Topics covered include leadership styles, youth leadership development, patrol leaders' council, teaching Scouting skills, the Scoutmaster's conference, and growing the troop. Committee: This training course ensures you understand the roles and responsibilities of each troop committee member. It is a team-building experience ideal for the whole committee. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) This is the second part of Scoutmaster Specific Training. It is an adult leader course that uses the Patrol Method to teach the same outdoor skills taught to the Scouts as they progress from Tenderfoot to First Class. This course involves a weekend of camping with the Patrols established during the Leader Specific Training. Wood Badge
Wood Badge is the adult complement to NYLT. Reflecting the best of nearly a century of Scouting experience, the course draws upon the most current leadership models used by corporate America, academic circles, and successful outdoor organizations throughout the country. It builds on the best traditions and experiences of Wood Badge and also draws from a wide range of sources within and beyond the bounds of Scouting to present the latest in leadership theory and team development. Hazardous Weather Training Two adults from each unit must have taken this course before the unit will be allowed to obtain a tour permit for overnight camping. Safety Afloat One adult from each unit must have taken this course before the unit will be allowed to obtain a tour permit for any boating activities. Safe Swim Defense One adult from each unit must have taken this course before the unit will be allowed to obtain a tour permit for any swimming activities. Climb on Safely This course covers the basics in how a scouting unit can carry out a safe climbing/repelling activity. Certified Climbing instructors are still required at every climbing event. Merit Badge Counselor Training Training for adults who wish to serve as merit badge counselors. It covers qualifications, registration and procedures. |
